Emerson Spanish Dual Language School leads in language learning

Emerson Dual Language is a citywide magnet school located in the Loring Park neighborhood of Central Minneapolis, welcoming students from throughout the city. Students at Emerson experience a collaborative learning environment in two languages. Beginning in kindergarten, students receive 80% of their instruction in Spanish and 20% of their instruction in English. Instruction in English gradually increases with the English/Spanish ratio culminating at 50/50 in grade 5. All students learn to speak, read and write in both languages. Students are encouraged to continue with the Spanish dual language program at Andersen United Community School. Emerson is the oldest Spanish immersion program in Minnesota.

Kinder, 1st grade (up until quarter 2 of grade 1)	No previous English exposure required	No previous Spanish exposure required	No - no entrance assessment required
After quarter 2 of grade 1 and grades 2-5	Spanish oral proficiency required.	Previous Spanish literacy and language development learning through participation in a Dual Language, Bilingual or Immersion school setting required.	Yes*
*After the required entrance assessment is given, schools will let families know if students can participate in the program. Families may be referred to student placement for a school that is a better fit for their students if they do not meet the criteria.
